Theories reducing to Coulombian electrodynamics, relativistic electrodynamics doesn't

Scientific knowledge is accumulative. Theoretical and fundamental scientists require a single comprehensive theory applying to all physical phenomena. Coulombian electrodynamics is used for a broad range of electromagnetic phenomena. This implies that any theory of electromagnetism, to be taken seriously, would reduce to Coulombian electrodynamics in some limit.

This Research report studies the Coulombian limit of six theories, presenting the difficulties and inconsistencies found when rigorously revised. The theories considered are: relativistic field electrodynamics; Stefanovich electrodynamics theory; Weber electrodynamics; Wheeler & Feynman electrodynamics; Chubykalo & Smirnov-Rueda dual electrodynamics; and Stückelberg, Horwitz, & Piron action-at-a-distance theory.

This Research report shows that (i) the assertion that relativistic field electrodynamics reduces to the theory of Coulomb as well as (ii) the assertion that the static-field-low-velocity relativistic equation of motion is identical to the Coulombian equation of motion do not hold up on close inspection. For instance, the Coulombian potential ϕ = ϕ\(R\(t\)\) cannot be reproduced by the field potential (\ab ^)ϕ = (\ab ^)ϕ \( (\ab ^) x‚(\ab ^) t \) of relativistic electrodynamics in any limit. This is in agreement with earlier results showed in Phys. Rev. E (1997, 53, 5373; 1998, 57, 3683). It is also demonstrated that some observational difficulties of relativistic theories of electromagnetism —such as the unphysical self-interactions— are related to their lack of compatibility with Coulombian electrodynamics.

Among the six theories cited above, only the theories of Weber, of Chubykalo & Smirnov-Rueda, and of Stückelberg, Horwitz, & Piron reduce to Coulombian electrodynamics.

One of the main findings of this Research report is that all the current theories of electromagnetism revised belong to one of two incompatible classes, extending and generalizing the incompatibility between quantum electrodynamics and quantum mechanics denounced by Dirac. The main pros and cons for each kind are presented.

Finally, this Research report introduces the new post-relativity theory and discusses its possibilities and advantages over current theories.

Theories reducing to Newtonian gravity: general relativity doesn't

Scientific knowledge is accumulative. Theoretical and fundamental scientists require a single comprehensive theory applying to all physical phenomena. Newtonian gravity is used for a broad range of gravitational phenomena. This implies that any theory of gravity, to be taken seriously, would reduce to Newtonian gravity in some limit.

This Research report studies the Newtonian limit of six theories, presenting the difficulties and inconsistencies found when rigorously revised. The theories considered are: general relativity; nonlinear field theory; Stefanovich theory; the Weber & Mach relational theory by Assis & Graneau; Vladimirov's relational theory; and Stückelberg, Horwitz, & Piron action-at-a-distance theory worked by Trump & Schieve.

This Research report shows that (i) the assertion that general relativity reduces to the theory of Newton as well as (ii) the assertion that the quadratic-'field'-low-velocity geodesic equation of motion is identical to the Newtonian equation of motion do not hold upon close inspection. For instance, the Newtonian potential ϕ = ϕ\(R\(t\)\) cannot be reproduced by the metric 'potentials' (\ab ^)ϕ = (\ab ^)ϕ \( (\ab ^) r‚(\ab ^) t \) of general relativity in any limit. It is also demonstrated that some observational difficulties of relativistic theories of gravity —such as the unphysical boundaries imposed in general relativity— are related to their lack of compatibility with Newtonian gravity.

Among the current theories of gravitation cited above, only the theory of Weber, Assis, & Graneau and the theory proposed by Stückelberg, Horwitz, Piron, Trump, & Schieve reduce to Newtonian gravity.

One of the main findings of this Research report is that all current theories of gravity revised belong to one of two incompatible classes, extending and generalizing the incompatibility between quantum electrodynamics and quantum mechanics denounced by Dirac. The main pros and cons for each kind are presented.

Moreover, it is showed that the assertions of complete equivalence between general relativity and the field theory over flat spacetime are based in a confusion of the field theoretic effective metric (\ab ∨)g(\sub μν) with the metric (\ab ^)g(\sub μν) in general relativity. Quasi-equivalence in a weak limit is showed.

Finally, this Research report introduces the new post-relativity theory and discusses its possibilities and advantages over current theories. Cosmological and astrophysical puzzles, and specially the topics of dark matter and dark energy, would be solved in this new gravitational approach.

CSReport package: new journal format over an Unicode extension of TeX engine

The canonical meta language (CanonML) continues under active development at laboratory. However, its formal structure, syntax, and basic semantics are already sufficiently developed to be tested in a real production environment such as the Canonical Science Reports journal. As a consequence of the current lack of final specification for CanonML, there exists not native engine that can be used to translate the contents of Canonical Science Reports to pixels in a monitor or dots in a printer. The development of native CanonML rendering engines is left for a future.

After testing alternative models for rendering CanonML contents, an improved TeX engine has been selected for the publishing model of this journal. Several advanced typographical features are available through a TeX engine, including ligatures and pair kerning.

The new format for Canonical Science Reports continues doing an intensive use of color to convey meaning. Readers may also find a broad class of formatting changes. The overall design is fresh and its modern look matches the new vision of Nature offered by canonical science. The new font plays an important role.

This Announcement report gives a concise presentation of CSReport, the preferred submission format for this journal. This package is built over an Unicode extension of TeX, and emphasizes the use of semantic markup and the reusing of code. This presentation includes samples of code showing advantages over Donald E. Knuth's original version.
